The CLEVELAND C54780 is a 5/8-11 UNC straight flute hand tap designed for cutting internal threads in both blind holes and through-holes. Built from high speed steel with a bright uncoated finish, this plug chamfer tap provides a reliable entry geometry suited to general threading operations in a machine shop or field environment. It runs 4 flutes, measures 3.813 inches overall length, and carries a 1.09-inch thread length. The H3 thread limit and 3B class of fit make it appropriate for standard tolerance internal thread applications. Licensed machinists and tool-and-die tradespeople are the primary users.
This tap is rated for threading alloy steel, carbon steel, aluminum, and free-machining stainless steel. The plug chamfer, which features a moderate lead of approximately 3 to 5 threads, allows starting in a pre-drilled hole and progressing through the full thread depth with hand or machine tapping equipment. It suits production and maintenance threading tasks where a standard UNC 5/8-11 internal thread is required. The straight flute design works in both blind and through-hole configurations, provided chips are managed correctly during the operation.
Designed for use in applications requiring a 5/8-11 UNC internal thread. Rated for alloy steel, carbon steel, aluminum, and free-machining stainless steel workpieces. Part of the Cleveland Series 1002 tap line.
Tap installation should be performed by a qualified machinist or tradesperson familiar with threading operations. Always ensure the workpiece is securely fixtured and the tap is started square to the drilled hole to prevent tap breakage or thread misalignment. Use an appropriate cutting fluid for the workpiece material to extend tool life and improve thread quality. For blind hole applications, monitor chip buildup and back the tap out periodically to clear flutes.
