The CLEVELAND C54727 is a 1/2-13 UNC straight-flute hand tap designed for cutting internal threads in both blind holes and through-holes. Built from high speed steel with a bright uncoated finish, it features four flutes and a plug chamfer, which provides a gradual thread lead suitable for a wide range of general-purpose tapping applications. The tap is ground to a Class 3B fit with an H3 thread limit, delivering close-tolerance threads. Overall length is 3.375 inches with a thread length of 0.94 inches. It is intended for use by machinists, tool-and-die makers, and maintenance technicians working in manual or low-speed machine tapping operations.
This tap is suited for threading alloy steel, carbon steel, aluminum, and free-machining stainless steel workpieces. The plug chamfer style makes it a practical choice for starting threads in through-holes as well as blind holes with sufficient depth for the chamfer lead. It is appropriate for both job-shop production and maintenance-repair-operations environments where 1/2-13 UNC threads are required. The straight-flute design keeps chips moving predictably and is a standard choice for these material types in right-hand thread applications.
Designed for cutting 1/2-13 UNC right-hand internal threads in alloy steel, carbon steel, aluminum, and free-machining stainless steel. Compatible with standard tap wrenches and tapping heads that accept the 0.367-inch shank diameter of Cleveland Series 1002 hand taps.
This tap should be installed in a tap wrench or appropriate tapping fixture; ensure the workpiece is securely clamped before beginning the threading operation. Apply a suitable cutting fluid for the workpiece material to extend tap life and improve thread finish. Back the tap off periodically to break and clear chips, especially in blind-hole applications. Follow applicable shop safety practices and ensure the tap is properly aligned with the pilot hole before applying torque.
