The CLEVELAND C54589 is a 3/8-16 UNC bottoming hand tap designed for cutting internal threads in both blind holes and through-holes. Made from high speed steel (HSS) with a bright uncoated finish, this tap delivers reliable thread cutting across a wide range of workpiece materials. The 4-flute straight flute configuration provides stable chip formation and consistent thread geometry. With an overall length of 2.938 inches and a thread length of 0.75 inches, the C54589 meets Class 2B fit requirements at H5 thread limit. Right-hand cutting direction, standard taper-free bottoming chamfer, and no coolant-through design make this a straightforward, reliable production or maintenance tap.
The C54589 is suited for threading operations in job shops, maintenance facilities, and production environments where 3/8-16 UNC internal threads are required. The bottoming chamfer allows threading to the bottom of a blind hole, making it the correct choice when thread depth in a stopped bore is the priority. Compatible material applications include alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, and free-machining stainless steel. It is part of CLEVELAND Series 1003, a standard general-purpose hand tap line.
Designed for 3/8-16 UNC internal threading applications in alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, and free-machining stainless steel. Suitable for both blind hole and through-hole threading per input data for CLEVELAND Series 1003.
This tap is installed by machinists and maintenance technicians using a standard tap wrench or tapping fixture. Ensure the workpiece is securely clamped and the pilot hole is drilled to the correct tap drill diameter for 3/8-16 UNC before beginning. Apply cutting fluid appropriate to the workpiece material to reduce heat and extend tap life. For blind holes, clear chips frequently by backing the tap out to avoid breakage from chip packing at the bottom of the bore.
