The CLEVELAND C54584 is a 3/8-16 bottoming hand tap designed for cutting internal threads in both blind holes and through-holes. Built from high speed steel with a bright uncoated finish, this straight flute tap runs right-hand thread direction and is ground to a Class 3B fit with an H3 thread limit. It measures 2.938 inches overall length with a 0.75-inch thread length. The 4-flute geometry provides good chip control and stable cutting across a range of common engineering materials. It is sized for use with standard tap handles and wrenches used in machine shops, maintenance environments, and field repair work.
This tap is suited for threading 3/8-16 UNC holes in applications where the tap must reach close to the bottom of a blind hole. The bottoming chamfer style leaves only 1 to 2 incomplete threads at the entry, making it the correct choice when full threads are required at the base of a stopped bore. It works across a range of ferrous and non-ferrous materials including alloy steel, carbon steel, aluminum, and free-machining stainless steel. It is commonly used in fabrication, maintenance and repair, and general machining where hand tapping is preferred or required.
Designed as an OEM-style hand tap for cutting 3/8-16 UNC internal threads in alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, and free-machining stainless steel workpieces in blind hole and through-hole applications.
Hand taps should be installed using a properly sized tap wrench or T-handle for the shank diameter. Always back the tap off periodically to break chips and prevent binding, particularly in blind holes. Apply an appropriate cutting fluid for the workpiece material to extend tap life and improve thread quality. Ensure the hole is drilled to the correct tap drill diameter before threading, and verify the hole depth provides adequate clearance below the intended thread depth when tapping blind holes.
