The CLEVELAND C54580 is a 3/8-16 UNC straight-flute hand tap designed for cutting internal threads in a wide range of metallic workpiece materials. Built from high speed steel with a bright, uncoated finish, it features four flutes and a plug chamfer for efficient thread-starting in both blind and through-hole applications. The tap runs right-hand thread direction, carries a Class 2B fit, and holds an H2 thread limit for controlled tolerance. Overall length is 2.938 inches, with a 0.75-inch thread length. It is part of CLEVELAND Series 1002 and is sold individually.
This tap is suited for job shop, maintenance, and production threading operations where 3/8-16 UNC internal threads are required. The plug chamfer style — with a moderate lead — makes it a general-purpose choice when starting the tap from the open end of a hole. It is appropriate for both blind-hole and through-hole threading scenarios, and the four-flute straight-flute geometry keeps chip management straightforward in shorter-chipping materials.
Rated for use in alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, and free-machining stainless steel. Suitable for blind-hole and through-hole threading applications requiring a 3/8-16 UNC internal thread.
Hand taps should be installed by a machinist or qualified tradesperson using an appropriate tap wrench or tapping fixture. Always back the tap off periodically to break chips and prevent binding, particularly in blind holes. Apply a suitable cutting fluid for the workpiece material to extend tool life and improve thread quality. Ensure the workpiece is securely fixtured and that the correct drill size for a 3/8-16 UNC thread has been used before tapping.
