The CLEVELAND C54510 is a 5/16-18 UNC bottoming hand tap ground from high speed steel and finished bright (uncoated) for general-purpose threading work. With a 3-flute straight-flute geometry and a bottoming chamfer, it cuts threads to the bottom of blind holes and through holes alike. The tap carries a Class 3B fit and an H3 thread limit, targeting close-tolerance internal threads in production and maintenance environments. Overall length is 2.719 inches with a 0.69-inch thread length, keeping the tool compact enough for confined-area work. Licensed machinists, tool-and-die technicians, maintenance mechanics, and millwrights are the primary users.
The C54510 is suited for blind-hole and through-hole threading operations on a range of ferrous and non-ferrous workpiece materials. Its Series 1003 design covers manual hand-tapping and low-speed machine tapping applications in job shops, maintenance facilities, and manufacturing cells. The bottoming chamfer — typically 1 to 2 threads of lead — allows thread cutting that starts very close to the bottom of a blind hole, making it the correct choice when a spiral-point or plug tap has already been used to start the thread.
Designed for threading alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, and free-machining stainless steel workpieces. Suitable for blind-hole and through-hole threading applications in both manual hand-tapping and compatible low-speed machine-tapping setups.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist or maintenance mechanic familiar with hand-tapping procedures. Secure the workpiece before tapping and use a proper tap wrench sized for the square drive to maintain alignment and reduce the risk of tap breakage. Apply an appropriate cutting fluid for the workpiece material — cutting oil for steels, a light lubricant or kerosene for aluminum. Back the tap off periodically to break and clear chips, especially in blind-hole applications.
