The CLEVELAND C54276 is a straight-flute hand tap designed for cutting 8-32 UNC internal threads in both blind holes and through holes. It is manufactured from high speed steel with a bright (uncoated) finish and features a bottoming chamfer, making it the right tool for threading to the bottom of a blind hole where a plug or taper tap cannot reach. The tap carries a Class 2B fit designation and an H3 thread limit, producing threads suited to standard tolerance fastener assemblies. Overall length is 2.125 inches with a thread length of 0.38 inches. Machinists, tool-and-die technicians, and maintenance professionals use this tap in manual tapping operations.
This tap is well suited for job shop, production, and maintenance-repair-operations environments where 8-32 UNC blind-hole threading is required. It performs across a range of workpiece materials including alloy steel, carbon steel, aluminum, and free-machining stainless steel. The three-flute straight-flute geometry channels chips effectively in short blind holes and provides stable cutting in hand-tapping fixtures or tap handles. It is a Series 1003 standard tap, a widely stocked geometry for general-purpose threading applications.
Designed as a standard replacement or working tap for any hand tapping operation requiring 8-32 UNC internal threads. Compatible with conventional T-handle tap wrenches and machine tap holders sized for a 0.168-inch shank diameter. Fits Series 1003 tooling setups.
This tap is intended for use by machinists, maintenance technicians, and tooling professionals familiar with manual and machine tapping procedures. Always secure the workpiece firmly before tapping and use an appropriate cutting fluid matched to the workpiece material. Start the tap perpendicular to the drilled hole surface to avoid cross-threading and misalignment. For blind holes, advance and back off the tap periodically to break and clear chips and prevent tap breakage.
