The CLEVELAND C54268 is a straight-flute hand tap designed for cutting 8-32 UNC internal threads in both blind holes and through-holes. Ground from high speed steel (HSS) with a bright, uncoated finish, it delivers consistent thread quality across a range of ferrous and non-ferrous materials. The bottoming chamfer style allows threading to within a few pitches of the bottom of a blind hole — a critical requirement in close-tolerance fixturing and fastener applications. With a 3B class of fit and H2 thread limit, the C54268 produces threads at the tighter end of the standard tolerance range, making it well suited to precision machining environments. Machinists, tool-and-die makers, and maintenance technicians are the primary users.
This tap is rated for use in alloy steel, carbon steel, aluminum, and free-machining stainless steel. It is appropriate for manual hand-tapping operations and is sized for light bench work and machine shop maintenance tasks where a bottoming tap is needed to finish threads started with a taper or plug tap. Its compact overall length of 2.125 inches suits it to confined workpieces and small vises. The part ships individually and is sold as a single unit.
Designed as a standard hand tap for 8-32 UNC threading operations in alloy steel, carbon steel, aluminum, and free-machining stainless steel workpieces.
This tap is intended for use by machinists and qualified trade personnel following standard threading procedures. Secure the workpiece firmly before tapping, and use an appropriate cutting fluid or lubricant for the base material to extend tap life and improve thread finish. Apply steady, controlled torque with a properly sized tap wrench — never use an oversized handle that can snap the tap. Back off a quarter turn periodically to break chips when tapping blind holes in ductile materials.
