The CLEVELAND C54224 is a 6-32 UNC straight-flute hand tap designed for cutting internal threads in both blind holes and through holes. Built from high speed steel (HSS) with a bright, uncoated finish, this plug-chamfer tap produces clean, accurate threads in a range of ferrous and non-ferrous materials. The H3 thread limit and Class 2B fit keep the tap suited for standard tolerance threading applications. Overall length is 2.0 inches with a 0.38-inch thread length. The 3-flute design provides good chip clearance and is well-suited to hand or machine tapping operations where a balanced cutting action is needed.
This tap is intended for use in metalworking and machining applications across manufacturing, maintenance, and repair environments. The 6-32 thread size is a common fastener specification in light-gauge assemblies, electrical enclosures, and precision components. The plug chamfer — with a moderate lead-in angle — makes it a versatile choice for starting threads in either through-holes or blind holes with adequate depth. Machinists, toolmakers, and maintenance technicians working with alloy steel, carbon steel, aluminum, and free-machining stainless steel will find this tap covers a wide range of day-to-day threading needs.
Designed as a standard-fitment replacement or first-fit hand tap for 6-32 UNC threading applications in alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, and free-machining stainless steel workpieces. Part of the Cleveland Series 1002 tap line.
This tap is installed by machinists and maintenance technicians using a tap wrench or tapping fixture. Before tapping, ensure the workpiece is securely fixtured and the pilot hole is drilled to the correct tap drill diameter for a 6-32 UNC thread. Apply cutting fluid appropriate to the workpiece material to extend tap life and improve thread finish. Advance the tap in a consistent rotating motion, backing off periodically to break chips and prevent tap binding or breakage.
