The CLEVELAND C54217 is a 6-32 UNC straight-flute hand tap designed for cutting internal threads in a wide range of metallic workpiece materials. Built from high speed steel with a bright uncoated finish, it features a taper chamfer that progressively distributes cutting load across the leading threads for easier thread starting. The tap runs right-hand, class 3B fit, thread limit H2, with 3 flutes and an overall length of 2 inches. It is suited for use in both blind-hole and through-hole threading applications and is typically installed using a standard tap wrench or tapping fixture by machinists, tool-and-die tradespeople, and maintenance mechanics.
This tap is appropriate for general-purpose threading in production and maintenance environments. Its H2 thread limit and 3B class of fit make it a solid choice for standard tolerance internal threads where moderate to close fit is required. Compatible material applications include alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, and free-machining stainless steel. The straight-flute design is well-suited for through-hole threading and shorter blind holes where chip evacuation is managed manually or with cutting fluid.
Designed for blind-hole and through-hole threading in alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, and free-machining stainless steel workpieces requiring a 6-32 UNC internal thread to class 3B tolerance.
A licensed machinist or qualified maintenance mechanic should install this tap using a properly sized tap wrench or tapping fixture aligned perpendicular to the workpiece surface. Always apply an appropriate cutting fluid for the workpiece material to reduce heat and extend tap life. Reverse the tap periodically to break chips, particularly in blind holes. Inspect the tap for chipping or wear before each use — a damaged tap can seize in the hole and damage the workpiece.
