The CLEVELAND C54147 is a 4-40 UNC plug chamfer hand tap ground from high speed steel with a bright uncoated finish. It features a 2-flute straight flute geometry designed for cutting internal threads in both blind holes and through-holes. The plug chamfer provides a gradual lead-in that distributes cutting forces evenly, making it well suited for general-purpose tapping. Overall length is 1.875 inches with a thread length of 0.31 inches. The H2 thread limit holds a close tolerance for Class 2B and 3B fit applications. Right-hand cut only.
This tap is used in machine shop, maintenance, and field repair applications where 4-40 UNC threads are required in a range of workpiece materials. It is appropriate for both blind hole and through-hole threading operations. Compatible material applications include alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, and free-machining stainless steel. The straight flute design works best when chip evacuation can be managed by the operator, making it a practical choice for hand tapping or low-speed machine tapping setups.
Rated for threading alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, and free-machining stainless steel. Suitable for blind hole and through-hole threading applications requiring 4-40 UNC threads at Class 2B or 3B fit. Part of the CLEVELAND Series 1002 tap line.
Install using a standard tap wrench sized for a 3/16-inch square drive. Ensure the workpiece is securely fixtured before starting the tap to prevent thread misalignment. Apply appropriate cutting fluid for the workpiece material to reduce friction and extend tool life. Back the tap off periodically when threading blind holes to break and clear chips.
