The CLEVELAND C54115 is a 3-48 UNC straight-flute hand tap designed for cutting internal threads in both blind holes and through-holes. Built from high speed steel (HSS) with a bright, uncoated finish, this tap features a taper chamfer that gradually introduces the cutting edges into the workpiece for controlled thread engagement. It runs right-hand thread direction to a Class 2B fit with an H2 thread limit, making it suitable for standard tolerance threaded assemblies. The overall length is 1.813 inches, with a 0.5-inch thread length. It is installed by machinists and toolroom technicians working with hand tapping equipment or tapping fixtures.
This tap is suited for use in light-duty threading applications across a range of materials including alloy steel, carbon steel, aluminum, and free-machining stainless steel. The taper chamfer style makes it particularly effective as a starting tap when initiating threads in a new hole. With three straight flutes, chip evacuation is straightforward in through-hole applications, and it works in blind holes where chip management is carefully controlled. Typical applications include small-fastener thread production in fabrication, maintenance, and repair environments.
Designed for use in standard hand tapping operations on alloy steel, carbon steel, aluminum, and free-machining stainless steel workpieces requiring 3-48 UNC internal threads to a Class 2B fit.
This tap is installed by machinists or maintenance technicians using a tap wrench or tapping fixture aligned perpendicular to the workpiece surface. Always use an appropriate cutting fluid for the workpiece material to extend tool life and improve thread quality. For blind hole work, monitor chip accumulation and back off periodically to clear the flutes. Do not apply excessive torque, especially in harder materials, as small-diameter taps are susceptible to breakage.
