The CLEVELAND C54089 is a 2-56 taper hand tap designed for creating internal threads in both blind holes and through-holes. Built from high speed steel (HSS) with a bright, uncoated finish, this right-hand tap runs a 3-flute straight flute geometry suited for controlled chip handling. It carries a Class 2B fit with an H2 thread limit, holding tight tolerances appropriate for #2-56 UNC threads. Overall length is 1.75 inches (44.45 mm), with a thread length of 0.44 inches. The taper chamfer eases thread entry and is the standard choice for starting a new threaded hole from scratch. Machinists and toolroom technicians install this tap by hand or in a tap wrench as part of Series 1001.
This tap is intended for threading #2-56 UNC holes across a range of workpiece materials, including alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, and free-machining stainless steel. Its straight flute design makes it suitable for both blind hole and through-hole threading applications where chips can be backed out periodically during the tapping cycle. This tap is installed by machinists or toolroom technicians using a tap wrench or tapping fixture. Back the tap out periodically to break and clear chips, particularly in blind hole applications.
