The CLEVELAND C54088 is a straight-flute hand tap designed for cutting internal threads in a 2-56 UNC configuration. Built from high speed steel with a bright uncoated finish, it is suited for bottoming tap applications where threads must extend close to the bottom of a blind hole. The 2-flute geometry provides adequate chip clearance for a range of common workpiece materials. With an overall length of 1.75 inches and a thread length of 0.44 inches, this tap is sized for small-diameter work requiring precision thread engagement. It is a right-hand tap with a Class 2B fit and an H2 thread limit, meeting standard tolerance requirements for most general-purpose threaded fastener assemblies.
This tap is used in machine shops, maintenance environments, and production settings where 2-56 UNC internal threads are required. It is appropriate for both blind hole threading and through-hole threading applications. Compatible workpiece materials include alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, and free-machining stainless steel, making it a versatile choice for technicians and machinists working across multiple substrate types. The bottoming chamfer allows thread cutting to within a few threads of the hole bottom, which is critical when working in depth-limited blind holes.
Designed for cutting 2-56 UNC internal threads in blind hole and through-hole applications across alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, and free-machining stainless steel workpieces.
This tap is installed by hand or with a tap wrench and should be used with an appropriate cutting fluid for the workpiece material. Ensure the hole is drilled to the correct tap drill diameter for a 2-56 UNC thread before starting. Back the tap off periodically to break chips and prevent tap breakage, especially in blind holes. Secure the workpiece firmly before tapping to maintain thread alignment.
