The CLEVELAND C54087 is a 2-56 plug chamfer hand tap designed for cutting internal threads in blind and through-hole applications. Manufactured from high speed steel (HSS) with a bright, uncoated finish, it delivers reliable performance in production and maintenance threading tasks. The plug chamfer provides a gradual lead-in with 3 to 5 chamfered threads, making it suitable for both starting in a hole and completing threads close to the bottom. With an H2 thread limit and a Class 2B fit, this tap produces threads within standard tolerance for general fastener applications. Overall length is 1.75 inches with a thread length of 0.44 inches.
This tap is intended for use in machine shops, maintenance facilities, and field repair environments where small-diameter unified coarse thread fasteners are required. It is suited for threading operations in alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, and free-machining stainless steel. The 2-flute straight flute design is appropriate for through-hole threading as well as short blind-hole threading where chip clearance allows. Machinists and maintenance technicians are the primary users, working with standard tap handles or tapping attachments compatible with the 0.141-inch shank diameter.
Designed as an OEM-style hand tap for use in any standard tap handle or tapping fixture accepting a 0.141-inch shank diameter with a 3/16-inch square drive. Suitable for threading alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, and free-machining stainless steel workpieces per Series 1002 specifications.
This tap is installed by machinists or maintenance technicians using a standard tap wrench sized to the 3/16-inch square drive. Always ensure the workpiece is secured and the tap is aligned perpendicular to the hole before starting to avoid tap breakage in this small diameter. Apply cutting fluid appropriate for the workpiece material to improve thread quality and extend tap life. Back the tap off periodically to break chips, particularly in blind-hole operations.
