The CLEVELAND C52173 is a cobalt square end mill built for demanding material removal in ferrous metals and high-temperature alloys. Manufactured from M42 cobalt high-speed steel, it delivers heat resistance and edge retention that standard HSS tooling cannot match. The 7/32 inch (0.2188 inch) cutting diameter pairs with a 9/16 inch length of cut and a 3/8 inch straight-cylindrical shank with Weldon flat. A four-flute, right-hand spiral configuration at a 30-degree helix angle provides efficient chip evacuation and a stable cutting action. This is a double-end design, giving machinists two usable cutting ends per tool. Installation and use are performed by machinists and toolroom personnel on vertical mills, CNC machining centers, and manual knee mills.
The C52173 is suited for slotting, profiling, and peripheral milling in high-temperature alloys, stainless steel, and general steel workpieces. The centercutting geometry allows plunge entry directly into the workpiece without a pre-drilled hole. The regular-length body keeps the tool rigid in tight-tolerance applications where deflection must be minimized. This end mill fits production and job-shop environments where cobalt tooling is specified for difficult-to-machine materials.
Designed for use in standard 3/8 inch end mill holders or collet chucks compatible with straight-cylindrical Weldon flat shanks. Primary workpiece materials include high-temperature alloys, stainless steel, and steel as designated by material codes M, P, and S. Part of the Cleveland HDC-4C series.
Installation is performed by a qualified machinist or toolroom technician. Power down and lock out the spindle before securing or removing any cutting tool. Ensure the holder bore and shank are clean and free of chips or burrs before seating the tool. Verify correct torque on the set screw against the Weldon flat per the machine manufacturer's toolholder specifications before beginning any cut.
