The CLEVELAND C44622 is a rectangle ground tool bit blank machined from M2 high-speed steel (HSS). It measures 3/8 inches wide, 1/2 inches high, and 4 inches in overall length. M2 HSS offers a strong balance of wear resistance, toughness, and red hardness, making it well suited for custom tool grinding applications. This blank arrives ground on all surfaces, providing a consistent starting geometry for machinists who need to profile or regrind a tool to a specific cutting geometry. It is a standard choice for lathe, shaper, and manual machining operations where a shop-ground tool is required.
This tool bit blank is used in metal cutting environments where machinists grind their own single-point tools to match a specific profile, material, or operation. Typical applications include turning, facing, boring, and form-tool work on manual lathes and shapers. The 3/8 inches by 1/2 inches cross-section fits commonly sized tool posts and holders found in job shops, maintenance facilities, and vocational machining programs. It is appropriate for cutting ferrous and non-ferrous metals as well as some plastics depending on the geometry ground by the end user.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement and standard-fit tool bit blank for manual lathes, shapers, and similar machine tools that accept 3/8 inches by 1/2 inches rectangular tool bit stock.
Tool bit blanks are ground to final geometry by a qualified machinist using a bench or tool grinder with an appropriate wheel rated for high-speed steel. Ensure the grinder guard is in place and personal protective equipment including eye protection is worn during grinding. Secure the blank firmly in a tool holder or grinder rest before applying to the wheel to prevent loss of control. Allow the blank to cool periodically during grinding to avoid overheating the cutting edge and altering the steel's hardness.
