The CLEVELAND C44600 is a rectangular ground tool bit blank manufactured from M2 high-speed steel. It measures 1/4 inch wide, 3/8 inch high, and 2-1/2 inches in overall length. Tool bit blanks serve as unfinished cutting tool stock, allowing machinists and toolmakers to grind custom profiles for turning, facing, threading, and other lathe or shaper operations. The ground finish provides close dimensional tolerances straight from the blank, reducing the amount of material removal needed to achieve a final cutting edge. M2 high-speed steel offers a strong balance of hardness, wear resistance, and toughness suited to general-purpose cutting applications in production and job-shop environments.
This tool bit blank is intended for use in machine shops, toolrooms, and production facilities where custom-ground single-point cutting tools are required. It is well-suited for manual lathes, shapers, planers, and similar machine tools that accept square or rectangular tool bit stock. Machinists grind this blank to a specific geometry and relief angle to match the material being cut and the operation being performed. The 1/4 inch by 3/8 inch cross-section fits standard tool holders and lantern-style tool posts that accept smaller-format bit stock.
Designed as a general-purpose tool bit blank for manual lathes, shapers, and similar machine tools that accept 1/4 inch by 3/8 inch rectangular bit stock.
Tool bit blanks require grinding to a finished cutting geometry before use — install only after the correct relief, rake, and clearance angles have been established for the intended material and operation. Use appropriate personal protective equipment when grinding, including eye protection rated for grinding operations. Secure the blank firmly in the tool holder or grinding fixture before machining to prevent movement. Inspect the finished tool edge for cracks or chips before mounting in the machine tool.
