The CLEVELAND C44575 is a square ground tool bit blank machined from M42 cobalt high-speed steel. It measures 0.25 inches wide, 0.25 inches high, and 2.5 inches in overall length. M42 cobalt grade provides increased hardness and heat resistance compared to standard M2 high-speed steel, making it well suited for cutting harder workpiece materials at elevated speeds. The blank arrives ground on all surfaces, giving machinists a consistent, accurate starting point for custom tool geometry. This bit blank is intended for use by machinists and toolroom professionals who grind their own single-point lathe tools, form tools, and specialty cutting tools to exact profiles.
This tool bit blank is used in production and toolroom environments where standard insert tooling does not meet the required geometry. Typical applications include single-point turning, boring, and threading operations on manual and CNC lathes. The M42 cobalt composition handles stainless steels, nickel alloys, and other difficult-to-machine materials that would quickly degrade a conventional high-speed steel blank. Machinists grind the blank to the required rake, relief, and nose radius angles on a bench or surface grinder before installation in a tool holder or boring bar.
Designed as a standard 0.25-inch square tool bit blank for use in toolroom and production lathe applications requiring M42 cobalt high-speed steel ground blanks.
Tool bit blanks are ground to final geometry by a qualified machinist using a bench grinder or surface grinder with an appropriate grinding wheel rated for high-speed steel. Secure the blank firmly in a tool holder or grinding fixture before grinding to prevent movement. Inspect the finished cutting edge for proper relief and rake angles before mounting in the lathe tool post. Always wear appropriate eye protection during grinding operations and ensure the grinder guard is in place.
