The CLEVELAND C44571 is a square-ground tool bit blank machined from M42 cobalt high-speed steel. It measures 3/16 inches wide by 3/16 inches high with an overall length of 2-1/2 inches. Tool bit blanks are unformed cutting tool stock that machinists grind to a custom profile on a bench or surface grinder. M42 cobalt grade provides elevated hot hardness and wear resistance compared to standard M2 high-speed steel, making it well suited for interrupted cuts and harder workpiece materials. This blank ships in a ground finish, giving machinists a consistent, burr-free starting surface before custom sharpening.
This blank is used in conventional machining environments where a custom-ground single-point tool is required. Typical applications include turning, boring, threading, and form-tool work on manual engine lathes and turret lathes. The square cross-section fits standard tool holders and lantern-style post holders sized for 3/16-inch tooling. Machinists working with stainless steel, high-nickel alloys, titanium, and other difficult-to-machine materials frequently specify M42 cobalt blanks because the 8-percent cobalt content helps the cutting edge hold up at elevated temperatures generated in those cuts.
Designed as a standard tool bit blank for use in 3/16-inch tool holder positions on manual engine lathes, turret lathes, and similar machine tool setups requiring custom-ground single-point cutting tools.
Grinding of tool bit blanks should be performed by a qualified machinist or toolroom technician using appropriate bench, pedestal, or surface grinding equipment. Always wear eye protection and use wheel guards rated for the grinding application when shaping this blank. Secure the blank firmly in a tool grinding fixture or vise to maintain consistent relief and rake angles during grinding. Allow the blank to cool periodically during grinding to avoid drawing the temper of the cobalt steel.
