The CLEVELAND C44556 is a square-ground tool bit blank manufactured from M42 cobalt high-speed steel. It measures 3/4 inches wide by 3/4 inches high with a 5-inch overall length. This blank is intended to be custom-ground by the end user into a specific cutting tool geometry — such as a turning, boring, or threading tool — for use in a lathe or similar machine tool. M42 cobalt HSS offers elevated heat and wear resistance compared to standard M2 HSS, making it well-suited for difficult-to-machine materials including stainless steel, titanium alloys, and hardened steels. The square cross-section and precision ground surfaces provide a consistent, ready-to-grind starting point for tool room applications.
This tool bit blank is used in metal machining environments where operators or tool grinders need to produce custom single-point or form tools. Typical applications include production turning, manual lathe work, and prototype tooling in job shops, maintenance facilities, and manufacturing plants. The 3/4-inch square shank accommodates a range of standard tool holders and lantern-style lathe post setups commonly found on engine lathes. The 5-inch length gives sufficient stock for multiple resharpening cycles over the tool's service life.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement and standard tool room blank suitable for use in engine lathes, turret lathes, and similar machine tool setups that accept 3/4-inch square tool bit shanks.
Tool bit blanks are ground to final geometry by a qualified machinist or tool grinder using a bench or pedestal grinding wheel appropriate for high-speed steel. Ensure the grinding wheel is rated for HSS before use and dress the wheel prior to grinding. Secure the blank firmly in a tool grinding fixture or rest to maintain consistent relief and rake angles during shaping. Always wear eye protection and follow applicable shop safety practices during grinding operations.
