The CLEVELAND C40072 is a 3-flute, single-end square end mill manufactured from powdered metal (PM) steel, designed for milling operations on non-ferrous metals and similar materials. It carries a 3/8 inch cutting diameter with a 3/4 inch length of cut and a 2-1/2 inch overall length. The straight cylindrical shank with Weldon flat measures 3/8 inch in diameter for secure tool holding in standard end mill holders. A 42-degree helix angle promotes efficient chip evacuation, while the spiral flute geometry and right-hand cut with right-hand flute configuration are suited to general-purpose milling applications where consistent chip flow is required. The tool is uncoated and centercutting, allowing plunge entry into the workpiece.
The C40072 belongs to the Cleveland PM-539R series, intended for machining non-ferrous metals such as aluminum, brass, copper, and plastics. Its regular-length geometry fits standard vertical and horizontal milling setups in job shops, production environments, and maintenance machining. The centercutting design allows both peripheral and plunge cuts, giving machinists flexibility in slotting, profiling, and pocketing operations. Shank compatibility with standard R8, ER collet, and Weldon-style tool holders makes setup straightforward on most knee mills and CNC machining centers.
Part of the Cleveland PM-539R series. Designed for use on non-ferrous metals as indicated by primary workpiece material code N. Fits standard 3/8 inch end mill holders, ER collet chucks, and Weldon-flat retention tool holders.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist following shop safety protocols. Ensure the spindle is fully stopped and the machine is powered down before loading or changing tooling. Verify tool holder runout with a dial indicator before beginning cuts, as excessive runout accelerates wear on powdered metal tooling. Consult the machine manufacturer guidelines and applicable shop standards for proper clamping torque on set screws used with Weldon flat holders.
