The CLEVELAND C39088 is a 2-flute square end mill designed for general-purpose milling in ferrous and non-ferrous materials. The cutter is ground from high speed steel (HSS) and finished with a titanium nitride (TiN) coating that improves surface hardness and extends tool life in production environments. The 0.5-inch cutting diameter pairs with a 2-inch length of cut, giving machinists reach for slotting, profiling, and peripheral milling. A 30-degree helix angle promotes smooth chip evacuation and reduces cutting forces. This is a centercutting design, which means the tool can plunge directly into a workpiece without a pre-drilled entry hole. Machinists, tool-and-die technicians, and CNC operators are the typical users.
The C39088 belongs to the Cleveland HG-2 long series and is suited for milling operations on cast iron, non-ferrous metals, and steel. The 4-inch overall length accommodates setups where standard-reach end mills fall short. The straight-cylindrical shank with Weldon flat provides positive engagement in standard side-lock holders, reducing pullout risk during aggressive cuts. Right-hand cut and right-hand spiral flute geometry is standard for conventional machining center spindles.
Designed for use in standard 0.5-inch end mill holders, collet chucks, and side-lock holders on CNC machining centers and manual knee mills. Suitable for cutting cast iron, non-ferrous metals, and steel as noted in the Cleveland HG-2 series specification.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist following shop safety procedures. Ensure the machine spindle is fully stopped and locked out before changing tooling. Seat the Weldon flat against the set screw in the holder to prevent axial pullout, and verify tool runout with a dial indicator before beginning a cut. Follow machine manufacturer torque recommendations for the specific holder type in use.
