The CLEVELAND C38960 is a 2-flute, centercutting keyway end mill designed for precision milling and finishing operations in metalworking applications. Manufactured from high speed steel (HSS) with a titanium carbonitride (TiCN) finish, it offers improved wear resistance and lubricity over uncoated HSS tooling. The cutter diameter is 0.25 inches with a 3/8-inch straight shank featuring a Weldon flat for secure tool holding. The length of cut is 0.5 inches, the overall length (OAL) is 2-7/16 inches, and the helix angle is 30 degrees. This end mill is suited to finishing-type material removal and is installed by machinists and toolroom professionals on conventional and CNC milling equipment.
The C38960 is rated for primary use in cast iron and steel (ISO material codes K and P). It is also applicable to non-ferrous metals (ISO code N) as a secondary workpiece material. The spiral flute geometry and TiCN coating make it a practical choice for keyway cutting, slotting, and light profiling on ferrous and non-ferrous parts in job shop, maintenance, and production environments. The centercutting design allows plunge entry directly into the workpiece without a pre-drilled pilot hole.
Designed for use in standard 3/8-inch end mill holders or collets on vertical milling machines and CNC machining centers. Primary workpiece materials are cast iron and steel; secondary compatibility includes non-ferrous metals. Part of the Cleveland HG-2K series.
Installation and operation should be performed by qualified machinists following applicable shop safety procedures. Secure the Weldon flat shank firmly in a matching end mill holder and verify runout before cutting. Ensure the spindle is at a full stop before changing tooling or measuring the workpiece. Do not exceed the rated depth of cut for the listed length of cut to avoid tool deflection or breakage.
