The CLEVELAND C38948 is a 2-flute, high speed steel keyway end mill designed for precision milling of keyways and slots in ferrous and non-ferrous metals. It features a TiN (titanium nitride) finish that extends tool life by reducing friction and wear at the cutting edge. The 3/4 inch cutting diameter pairs with a 1.3125 inch length of cut, giving machinists the reach needed for standard keyway depths without sacrificing rigidity. A 30-degree helix angle and centercutting geometry allow both plunge and peripheral cutting operations. Shank diameter matches the cutting diameter at 3/4 inch, and overall length is 3.875 inches. Typically installed and operated by machinists, tool and die makers, and maintenance technicians working on CNC mills, knee mills, or manual bridgeport-style machines.
This end mill is suited for finishing operations in keyway and slot milling applications. The straight shank with Weldon flat allows secure tool holding in set-screw style end mill holders, reducing pullout risk under cutting loads. Primary workpiece materials include steel and cast iron, making it appropriate for general maintenance machining, repair work, and light production environments. The 2-flute design provides good chip clearance in the cut, which is especially important when milling enclosed keyway slots where chip evacuation is restricted.

Installation is performed by a machinist or maintenance technician using a standard end mill holder with a set-screw Weldon flat seat. Ensure the machine spindle is fully de-energized and locked out before changing tooling. Confirm holder runout does not exceed the mill diameter tolerance of plus 0.0000 / minus 0.0015 inch to maintain cut quality. Do not exceed the recommended depth of cut for the cutting diameter when plunge milling without first confirming machine rigidity.
