The CLEVELAND C31970 is a 4-flute square end mill designed for general-purpose milling in a wide range of metalworking applications. Built from M42 powdered metal (PM) tool steel, it features a titanium nitride (TiN) finish that extends tool life by reducing friction and resisting wear at elevated cutting temperatures. The mill measures 7/16 inch (0.4375 inch) in diameter with a 1 inch length of cut and a 2-11/16 inch overall length. A 1/2 inch straight-cylindrical shank with Weldon flat provides secure tool holding in standard end mill holders. The 37-degree spiral flute geometry and right-hand cut with right-hand flute deliver efficient chip evacuation. Center-cutting capability allows plunge entry directly into the workpiece.
This end mill is suited for slot milling, profile milling, and peripheral cutting on ferrous and non-ferrous metals. The PM-4 series is engineered for use on workpiece material groups H (hardened steels), K (cast irons), M (stainless steels), P (carbon and alloy steels), and S (high-temperature alloys). It fits conventional CNC machining centers and manual knee mills where a 1/2 inch collet or end mill holder is used. Regular-length geometry makes it a practical choice for standard-depth cuts without excessive overhang.
Designed for use with standard 1/2 inch end mill holders, collet chucks, and Weldon-style set-screw holders on CNC machining centers and manual knee mills. Compatible with workpiece material groups H, K, M, P, and S per the PM-4 series rating.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist or toolroom technician. Ensure the machine spindle is fully stopped and power is locked out before mounting or removing the end mill. Seat the shank fully into the holder and engage the set screw against the Weldon flat to prevent axial pullout during cutting. Verify runout with a dial indicator before commencing a production cut.
