The CLEVELAND C24170 is a single-ended spotting drill designed to create accurate starting points for twist drills, countersinks, and other rotary cutting tools. Built from high-speed steel with a bright, uncoated finish, it features a 90-degree point angle that produces a clean, precisely centered cone seat to guide subsequent drilling operations and reduce walkout. The cutting diameter is 0.625 inches, the shank diameter is 0.625 inches, and the overall length is 4.25 inches. This tool is suited for general-purpose shop work in ferrous and non-ferrous materials. Licensed machinists, tool-and-die makers, and maintenance mechanics are the primary users.
The C24170 fits standard CNC machining centers, knee mills, drill presses, and manual lathes equipped with a straight-cylindrical shank holder or drill chuck. The 90-degree point angle matches the included angle used on most standard spotting and countersinking operations, making it a practical choice for production and job-shop environments where consistent hole location is required before full-depth drilling. The 1.625-inch flute length accommodates the shallow depth typical of spotting operations without excessive tool extension.
Designed as a general-purpose spotting drill compatible with drill presses, milling machines, and CNC machining centers accepting a 0.625-inch straight-cylindrical shank; part of the Cleveland Series 2635 spotting drill line.
Installation and use should be performed by a qualified machinist or tooling technician. Before mounting, ensure the spindle is fully stopped and the machine is locked out or powered down per shop safety procedures. Secure the shank fully in a properly sized collet, end-mill holder, or drill chuck, confirming runout is within acceptable limits before starting the cut. Spotting operations should use appropriate cutting speeds and feeds for the workpiece material to avoid work-hardening or premature tool wear.
