The CLEVELAND C23852 is a mechanics-length twist drill bit designed for general-purpose hole-making in metal fabrication and maintenance applications. Built from high-speed steel (HSS), it measures 13/32 inch (0.4062 inch decimal) in diameter with an overall length of 4.38 inches and a flute length of 2.81 inches. The 135-degree split point geometry reduces walking on entry, allowing the bit to self-center without a pilot hole. The flatted shank resists rotation in the chuck. Right-hand cut with spiral flutes for efficient chip evacuation. Manufactured to ASME B94.11M standards.
This bit is suited for drilling cast iron and steel in residential and light commercial service work, production maintenance, and field repair situations. The mechanics-length body — shorter than jobber-length bits — provides added rigidity in tight spaces and reduces deflection in deep-hole applications. It is a single-piece unit packaged individually, appropriate for tool-crib stocking or single-use replacement. Electricians, pipefitters, HVAC technicians, and general maintenance mechanics commonly carry mechanics-length bits for drilling through structural steel, brackets, and enclosures.
Designed as a general-purpose mechanics-length drill bit compatible with standard 3-jaw keyed or keyless drill chucks accepting a 0.4062-inch flatted shank. Suitable for drilling cast iron and steel workpieces per Series 1875R general-purpose specifications.
Secure the flatted shank firmly in the chuck before drilling to prevent slippage. Use cutting fluid or lubricant when drilling steel to extend bit life and improve hole quality. Inspect the cutting edges before each use and replace the bit if chipping or dulling is present, as a degraded point increases heat and can damage the workpiece. Follow applicable shop safety practices and wear eye protection whenever drilling metal.
