The CLEVELAND C16983 is a jobber-length twist drill bit designed for demanding metal-cutting applications. Built from M42 cobalt high-speed steel and finished with a TiAlN coating, it handles elevated cutting temperatures while maintaining edge hardness. The 135-degree split point starts on contact without a center punch and reduces walking on hard surfaces. At 0.1360 inches in diameter (wire size 29) with a 2-7/8 inch overall length, this bit is suited for through-hole drilling in tough materials. It is installed by machinists, tool-and-die tradespeople, and metalworking professionals working on production or maintenance operations.
The C16983 is built for drilling cast iron and stainless steel, two materials that demand high heat resistance and a geometry that clears chips efficiently. The parabolic flute profile improves chip evacuation in deep holes and reduces the chance of chip packing. The straight-cylindrical shank seats directly in standard drill chucks and collets without adapters. This bit fits typical jobber-length applications in drill presses, CNC machining centers, and hand-held power drills where a 0.1360-inch hole is required.
Designed for use in standard drill chucks and collets accepting a 0.1360-inch straight-cylindrical shank. Primary workpiece materials are cast iron and stainless steel. Conforms to ASME B94.11M and DIN 338 standards. Part of the Cleveland Series 2075A jobber-length cobalt drill bit line.
Install in a properly sized drill chuck or collet and verify the shank is fully seated before operation. Set spindle speed according to the workpiece material and bit diameter — stainless steel and cast iron require lower surface footage than mild steel. No coolant-through capability; apply cutting fluid externally when drilling stainless steel or other work-hardening alloys. Inspect the cutting edges and point geometry before each use and replace the bit if the split point shows wear or chipping.
