The CLEVELAND C16901 is a taper length twist drill bit built for heavy-duty drilling in demanding trade and industrial applications. Manufactured from M42 cobalt high-speed steel and finished with a Titanium Nitride (TiN) coating, this bit delivers extended tool life in hard and abrasive materials. It features a 5/16 inch diameter, a 135-degree split point for fast, self-centering starts without a center punch, and a parabolic flute geometry that aggressively evacuates chips to prevent packing and heat buildup. The straight shank seats in standard drill chucks without adapters, and the web-thinned, tapered web construction reduces cutting force in tough materials.
This bit is suited for metalworking and fabrication environments where standard jobber-length bits lack the reach needed for deeper holes. The taper length body gives additional clearance for through-holes in thicker stock. Rated for drilling aluminum, brass, carbon steel, cast iron, nickel alloy, stainless steel, tool steel, and plastic, the C16901 covers a broad range of materials encountered in machine shops, maintenance and repair operations, and commercial construction trade work. It meets ASME B94.11M, DIN 340, and DIN 338 standards.
Designed for use in any standard drill chuck accepting a 5/16 inch straight shank. Rated for drilling aluminum, brass, carbon steel, cast iron, nickel alloy, stainless steel, tool steel, and plastic per manufacturer material application data.
This bit is installed and operated by machinists, millwrights, pipefitters, and other trade professionals using standard drill presses, magnetic drills, or hand-held power drills. Secure the straight shank fully in the chuck and confirm it is centered before operation. Use appropriate cutting fluid or coolant when drilling steel and stainless to manage heat, especially at depth. Inspect the cutting edges for wear before each use and replace the bit if the point shows chipping or rounding.
