The CLEVELAND C16897 is a taper length cobalt drill bit in Letter E (0.250 inches) diameter, designed for demanding drilling applications in hard and abrasive materials. Built from M42 cobalt high-speed steel with a titanium nitride (TiN) coating, this bit delivers extended tool life and heat resistance beyond standard HSS tooling. The 135-degree split point reduces walking and allows drilling to start without a center punch. A parabolic flute geometry promotes fast chip evacuation and reduces cutting force in deeper holes. This is a heavy-duty, production-grade bit suited for machinists, fabricators, and maintenance trades working in metal-intensive environments.
The C16897 is appropriate for use in drill presses, CNC machines, and hand-held power drills where a straight shank and taper length are required. Material applications include aluminum, brass, carbon steel, cast iron, nickel alloy, plastic, stainless steel, and tool steel. The taper length body provides additional reach compared to jobber-length bits, making it useful in applications where clearance or hole depth demands more flute exposure. This bit ships individually and is suited for single-use procurement or bench stock replenishment.
The C16897 is compatible with drilling operations in aluminum, brass, carbon steel, cast iron, nickel alloy, plastic, stainless steel, and tool steel. It fits any drill chuck or collet rated for a 0.250-inch straight shank.
This bit is installed by a machinist or qualified tradesperson in a drill press, mill, or power drill with an appropriate chuck capacity. Secure the straight shank fully in the chuck before operation and verify runout is within acceptable tolerance for the application. Use appropriate cutting fluid or coolant for steel and stainless applications to prolong tool life. Inspect the cutting edges and TiN coating before each use and replace the bit if chipping or coating breakdown is observed.
