Product Description

The CLEVELAND C16797 is a taper length twist drill bit engineered for heavy-duty hole-making across a wide range of materials. Built from M42 cobalt high-speed steel, it delivers the heat and wear resistance needed for demanding production and fabrication work. The 135-degree split point reduces walking at entry and requires less thrust than a standard 118-degree point. The parabolic flute geometry clears chips aggressively, keeping the cutting zone cooler during deeper passes. At 7 inches overall length with a 4-3/8-inch flute, it reaches deeper setups than a jobber-length bit while maintaining a straight 25/64-inch shank for standard chuck compatibility. Licensed tradespeople and machining professionals install this bit in drilling operations where standard jobber bits fall short on reach or rigidity.

The C16797 is suited for through-hole and deep-hole drilling in structural fabrication shops, maintenance facilities, and machine shops. Its material application range covers aluminum, brass, carbon steel, cast iron, nickel alloy, plastic, stainless steel, and tool steel. Right-hand cutting direction makes it compatible with conventional drill presses, CNC machining centers, and hand-held power tools with standard chucks. The taper length designation makes it a practical choice when jobber bits lack reach and a long-series bit would introduce too much deflection.

Key Features

  • M42 cobalt construction for elevated heat resistance in hard and abrasive materials
  • 135-degree split point reduces entry walking and lowers required thrust
  • Parabolic flute geometry promotes fast chip evacuation in deep holes
  • Web-thinned, tapered web design reduces cutting resistance at the tip
  • Straight shank at 25/64 inch fits standard three-jaw chucks without an adapter
  • Meets ASME B94.11M and DIN 340 standards; diameter tolerance held to +0.0000 to -0.0010 inches

Compatibility

Designed for use in standard straight-shank drill chucks on drill presses, CNC machining centers, and hand-held power tools. Compatible material applications include aluminum, brass, carbon steel, cast iron, nickel alloy, plastic, stainless steel, and tool steel.

Installation Notes

A licensed machinist or qualified technician should secure the straight shank fully in a properly sized chuck before operation. Ensure the workpiece is firmly clamped or fixtured to prevent movement during drilling. Apply appropriate cutting fluid for the material being drilled, particularly when working with stainless steel or nickel alloys, to extend tool life and maintain hole quality. Inspect the cutting edges for chipping or wear before each use and replace the bit if the point is damaged.
