The CLEVELAND C16796 is a taper length drill bit engineered for heavy-duty metal-removal applications across a wide range of workpiece materials. Built from M42 cobalt high-speed steel, the bit holds hardness at elevated cutting temperatures that would degrade standard HSS tooling. The 135-degree split point starts on contact without a center punch and reduces walking on curved or irregular surfaces. A parabolic flute geometry evacuates chips aggressively, keeping the cutting edge clear during deep or interrupted cuts. At 3/8 inch diameter with a 4.25-inch flute length and 6.75-inch overall length, it reaches deeper bores than jobber-length equivalents. The straight shank seats in any standard drill chuck. Weight is 0.2 pounds.
This bit is suited for machine shop, fabrication, maintenance, and production drilling operations. It performs reliably in both handheld drill and drill press applications where taper length reach is required. Compatible materials include aluminum, brass, carbon steel, cast iron, nickel alloy, plastic, stainless steel, and tool steel. Machinists, millwrights, pipefitters, and maintenance mechanics are the typical end users. The split point and web-thinned, tapered web construction make it particularly effective in harder alloys and stainless where heat buildup is a concern.
Designed for use in materials including aluminum, brass, carbon steel, cast iron, nickel alloy, plastic, stainless steel, and tool steel. The 3/8-inch straight shank fits standard three-jaw drill chucks on both handheld and stationary equipment.
Install and remove this bit only with the drill or machine powered down and the chuck fully stationary. Secure the straight shank firmly in the chuck with the key before operation. Use appropriate cutting fluid or coolant for the workpiece material to manage heat, particularly when drilling stainless steel or nickel alloys. Inspect the cutting edges before each use and replace the bit if chipping or heat discoloration is observed at the tip.
