The CLEVELAND C16788 is a taper length cobalt drill bit designed for heavy-duty drilling in tough materials. Built to M42 cobalt grade, it delivers superior heat resistance and edge retention compared to standard high-speed steel bits. The 135-degree split point starts on contact without center punching and reduces walking on hard surfaces. A parabolic flute geometry clears chips efficiently, making it well-suited for deeper holes and interrupted cuts. The straight shank measures 1/4 inch in diameter, and overall length comes in at 6.125 inches with a flute length of 3.75 inches. Right-hand cut only. Licensed machinists, tool and die workers, pipefitters, and industrial maintenance technicians commonly reach for this series when standard bits fall short.
The C16788 is rated for use in aluminum, brass, carbon steel, cast iron, nickel alloy, plastic, stainless steel, and tool steel. The taper length body provides additional reach compared to jobber-length bits, making it practical in applications where standard-length drills cannot access the work. It is a strong fit for shop floor drilling, field fabrication, and maintenance-repair-operations work wherever difficult-to-machine materials are encountered regularly.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement or direct-use taper length drill bit for 1/4-inch straight-shank drill chucks and holders rated for Letter E sizing. Compatible materials include aluminum, brass, carbon steel, cast iron, nickel alloy, plastic, stainless steel, and tool steel as specified by the manufacturer.
Install in a drill press, handheld power drill, or milling machine with a chuck rated for 1/4-inch straight shanks. Secure the shank fully and confirm chuck is tight before running. Apply appropriate cutting fluid for the material being drilled, especially when working stainless steel, nickel alloy, or tool steel, to manage heat buildup and preserve cutting edge life. Do not exceed the rated speed range for the material and bit diameter.
