Product Description

The CLEVELAND C16787 is a taper length cobalt drill bit built for demanding metalworking and fabrication applications. Manufactured from M42 cobalt high-speed steel, this bit delivers superior heat resistance and edge retention compared to standard HSS tooling. The 135-degree split point reduces walking at startup and minimizes the need for a center punch. An oxide gold coating provides additional lubricity and surface hardness. At 15/64 inch (0.2344 inch decimal) diameter with a 3.75-inch flute length and a 6.125-inch overall length, the taper length body offers extra reach for drilling through thicker stock or offset locations. Licensed electricians, machinists, pipefitters, and HVAC fabricators are the primary users of this grade of tooling.

The C16787 is designed for use on a wide range of materials including aluminum, brass, carbon steel, cast iron, nickel alloy, plastic, stainless steel, and tool steel. The parabolic flute geometry promotes efficient chip evacuation, which is critical when running at higher feed rates in production environments or when drilling deep holes in sticky alloys. The straight shank fits standard drill chucks on benchtop drill presses, magnetic drills, and handheld power drills. This bit is well-suited to shop and field use wherever a standard jobber length bit lacks the reach required by the application.

Key Features

  • M42 cobalt steel construction for extended tool life in hard and abrasive materials
  • 135-degree split point reduces thrust force and eliminates walking without center-punching
  • Parabolic flute design accelerates chip evacuation in deep-hole and high-feed drilling
  • Oxide gold coating adds surface lubricity and heat resistance
  • Web-thinned, tapered web configuration reduces cutting resistance throughout the flute length
  • Conforms to DIN 338 specification for consistent dimensional accuracy
  • Diameter tolerance held to +0.0000 to -0.0007 inch for precise hole sizing

Compatibility

Compatible material applications include aluminum, brass, carbon steel, cast iron, nickel alloy, plastic, stainless steel, and tool steel. The straight shank fits any standard drill chuck accepting a 15/64-inch shank diameter.

Installation Notes

Secure the shank fully in the chuck and verify concentricity before drilling. Always clamp the workpiece — never hand-hold material during drilling operations. Use appropriate cutting fluid or coolant when drilling stainless steel, nickel alloys, or tool steel to extend bit life and maintain dimensional accuracy. Inspect the cutting edges for wear after use on hard alloys and redress or replace the bit before edge degradation affects hole quality.
