The CLEVELAND C16782 is a taper length cobalt drill bit designed for demanding metal drilling applications where standard-length bits fall short. Built to M42 cobalt steel grade specifications, this bit features a 135-degree split point for fast, self-centering starts without center punching. The parabolic flute geometry accelerates chip evacuation and reduces heat buildup, making it well-suited for high-production drilling in tough materials. At 5/32 inch (0.1562 inch) diameter with a 3-inch flute length and 5-3/8 inch overall length, it provides the reach needed for deeper holes in structural and fabricated assemblies. Right-hand cut with a straight shank and web-thinned, tapered web construction complete the specification.
This drill bit is appropriate for use in fabrication shops, maintenance and repair operations, and industrial production environments. The cobalt construction and heavy-duty grade rating make it effective in materials that generate high cutting heat, including stainless steel, nickel alloy, tool steel, cast iron, carbon steel, aluminum, brass, and plastic. It is suited for use in standard drill presses, CNC machining centers, and handheld drilling equipment with compatible straight-shank chucks. Machinists, maintenance technicians, pipefitters, and fabricators working in metal-intensive trades are the primary users.
Rated for drilling aluminum, brass, carbon steel, cast iron, nickel alloy, plastic, stainless steel, and tool steel. Compatible with any straight-shank drill chuck accepting a 0.1562-inch shank diameter. Conforms to Series 2575 taper length geometry per ASME B94.11M and DIN 340.
Secure the shank fully in the chuck before drilling and verify the bit runs true with no visible runout. Use cutting fluid appropriate for the workpiece material, particularly when drilling stainless steel or nickel alloys, to extend tool life and maintain surface finish. Reduce feed rate as the bit exits the back side of the material to prevent grabbing or breakthrough damage. Inspect the cutting edges before each use and replace the bit when point geometry shows visible wear or chipping.
