The CLEVELAND C16638 is a jobber-length twist drill bit designed for precision drilling in metal and other hard materials. Built from M42 cobalt high-speed steel with a titanium nitride (TiN) coating, this bit handles heat and wear far better than standard HSS tooling. It carries a wire gauge size of 26, equal to 0.1470 inches in decimal. The 135-degree split point starts on contact without a center punch, reducing walking and improving hole location accuracy. Overall length is 3.0 inches, with a parabolic flute geometry that clears chips efficiently during deep drilling operations. Licensed tradespeople and machinists working in production or maintenance environments will find this bit suitable for demanding hole-making tasks.
This bit is suited for drilling ferrous metals, stainless steel, cast iron, and high-strength alloys where standard HSS bits wear prematurely. The TiN coating extends tool life in repetitive drilling cycles. The straight cylindrical shank at 0.1470 inches diameter fits standard drill chucks and collets without modification. It is commonly used in HVAC sheet metal fabrication, electrical conduit work, plumbing rough-in, and general mechanical assembly where consistent hole quality in tough materials is required.
Designed as a jobber-length drill bit compatible with standard 3-jaw drill chucks and collet holders accepting a 0.1470-inch straight cylindrical shank. Conforms to ASME B94.11M and DIN 338 standards.
Secure the shank fully in the chuck before operation and verify runout is within acceptable limits for precision work. Use cutting fluid or a suitable coolant when drilling stainless steel or other work-hardening alloys to maximize bit life. Operate at the recommended surface footage for cobalt tooling in the material being drilled; excessive speed without coolant will shorten coating life. Inspect the cutting edges for wear regularly and replace before bit deflection or oversized holes become an issue.
