The CLEVELAND C15989 is a heavy-duty cobalt jobber-length drill bit designed for drilling into superalloys, stainless steel, and other hard, heat-resistant materials. Built to M42 cobalt steel grade, it delivers superior red hardness and wear resistance compared to standard high-speed steel tooling. The bit features a 135-degree split point for self-centering starts and reduced thrust, and a fast spiral flute geometry that clears chips efficiently. At 5-3/8 inches overall length with a 2-inch flute, it fits standard jobber-length applications in machine shops, maintenance, and industrial fabrication environments. Machinists and tool-and-die professionals are the primary users.
This bit is suited for drilling superalloys, titanium alloys, and high-nickel materials where standard HSS tooling fails prematurely. It is also a reliable choice for stainless steel and hardened ferrous metals in production or maintenance settings. The 27/64-inch diameter and straight cylindrical shank make it compatible with standard drill chucks and CNC toolholders. A right-hand spiral cut and oxide coating contribute to heat dissipation and extended tool life during aggressive cutting cycles. It conforms to ASME B94.11M standards and meets NAS specification designations.
Designed as a jobber-length replacement or production drill bit for use in standard drill chucks and CNC machining centers accepting a 27/64-inch straight cylindrical shank; primary workpiece material rating is superalloy per supplier specification.
Installation and use of this bit should be performed by qualified machinists or maintenance technicians familiar with drill press, lathe, or CNC milling equipment. Secure the shank fully in the chuck or collet before operation and verify runout is within acceptable tolerances. Do not exceed the recommended feed and speed parameters for the workpiece material being drilled. Coolant-through drilling is not supported on this bit; apply cutting fluid externally when drilling hard alloys to manage heat buildup.
