The CLEVELAND C15987 is a cobalt jobber-length drill bit engineered for cutting hard and difficult-to-machine materials. Built from M42 cobalt high-speed steel with an oxide coating, this bit delivers the heat resistance and edge retention needed when drilling superalloys, stainless steel, and other tough workpiece materials. It features a 135-degree split point for fast penetration with minimal walking, a fast-spiral flute for efficient chip evacuation, and a web-thinned, tapered web design that reduces thrust during entry. This is a heavy-duty tool intended for machinists, maintenance techs, and fabricators working in demanding production or field environments.
The C15987 is sized at 13/32 inch (0.4062 inch decimal) diameter with a straight-cylindrical shank of equal 13/32 inch diameter, making it compatible with standard drill chucks across a broad range of drilling equipment. Its 5-1/4 inch overall length and 1-15/16 inch flute length position it as a standard jobber-length tool suitable for general-depth holes in plate stock, structural components, and machined parts. Primary application is drilling superalloys and other high-strength metals where standard high-speed steel bits lose edge retention too quickly. Right-hand cut configuration is standard for conventional CNC spindles and hand drills alike.
Designed as a heavy-duty OEM-style jobber drill in the Cleveland Series 3780, rated for superalloy as the primary workpiece material and suitable for other high-strength ferrous and non-ferrous metals where M42 cobalt tooling is specified.
Installation and use of this drill bit should be performed by qualified machinists or maintenance professionals familiar with proper speeds and feeds for cobalt tooling in hard materials. Secure the straight-cylindrical shank fully in a properly rated drill chuck before operation, and confirm the chuck key is removed before powering the spindle. Apply appropriate cutting fluid or coolant to the workpiece when drilling superalloys to maximize tool life, even though this bit does not support coolant-through delivery. Inspect the cutting edges for chipping or wear before each use and replace if edge integrity is compromised.
