The CLEVELAND C14616 is a screw machine length drill bit designed for high-production drilling in tight clearance applications. Built from M42 cobalt high-speed steel, this bit handles heat and wear better than standard HSS tooling, making it well suited for drilling alloy steels and aluminum. It carries a wire gauge size of No. 9, equal to 0.1960 inches in diameter, with an overall length of 2.25 inches and a 135-degree split point that reduces walking and requires less feed pressure at entry. The web-thinned design further eases penetration in harder workpiece materials. This is a heavy-duty grade bit intended for shop and field use by machinists, tool and die technicians, and maintenance professionals.
Screw machine length bits are the shortest standard drill length category, making the C14616 a practical choice where spindle clearance is limited or where rigidity is more important than reach. Typical applications include drilling in alloy steel, aluminum, and similar materials on drill presses, CNC machining centers, and handheld right-angle drills. The straight cylindrical shank seats in standard three-jaw chucks without any adapter. This bit conforms to ASME B94.11M and meets ANSI and DIN 1897 specification designations.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement or direct-use screw machine drill bit for applications requiring a No. 9 wire gauge hole in alloy steel or aluminum workpieces; fits any standard straight-shank drill chuck accepting a 0.1960-inch shank.
Installation of this bit is performed by machinists or maintenance technicians using a standard three-jaw chuck or collet system. Ensure the machine spindle is fully stopped and the chuck key is removed before inserting or removing the bit. Secure the shank fully into the chuck to prevent slippage under load. Follow shop safety practices and applicable OSHA machine guarding requirements when operating drilling equipment.
