The CLEVELAND C14504 is a screw machine length drill bit designed for high-production drilling in alloy steel, aluminum, and other demanding workpiece materials. Built from M42 cobalt high-speed steel, it delivers increased heat and wear resistance compared to standard HSS bits. The 135-degree split point reduces walking at entry and requires less thrust to initiate a hole. At 1-3/8 inches overall length, the shortened screw machine geometry provides added rigidity in tight-clearance applications. Two spiral flutes evacuate chips efficiently, and the web-thinned, parallel-web construction keeps cutting forces manageable across extended run cycles. This bit suits machinists, maintenance technicians, and fabricators working with CNC machines, drill presses, and handheld power tools.
The C14504 is sized at No. 58 wire gauge, equal to 0.0420 inch decimal diameter. The screw machine length format makes it well suited for short, rigid setups where a jobber-length bit would flex or chatter. Typical applications include production drilling in alloy steels and aluminum in both shop and field environments. The straight-cylindrical shank is compatible with standard three-jaw chucks and collet holders sized for 0.0420 inch shank stock. Right-hand cut geometry is standard for conventional drilling operations. The bit conforms to ASME B94.11M and DIN 1897 dimensional standards, making it a direct fit in metric and inch tooling setups.
Designed for use with standard three-jaw chucks and collet systems accepting a 0.0420 inch straight-cylindrical shank. Rated for drilling alloy steel and aluminum workpiece materials per manufacturer specifications.
Install into a properly sized chuck or collet and confirm secure seating before operation. Ensure the spindle speed and feed rate are appropriate for the workpiece material and bit diameter — consult published speeds-and-feeds charts for cobalt HSS tooling. No coolant-through capability is present on this bit; apply cutting fluid externally when drilling alloy steel or other work-hardening materials. Inspect the split point for chipping or wear before each use, as a damaged point will produce oversized or off-location holes.
