The CLEVELAND C14256 is a screw machine length drill bit designed for high-performance drilling in demanding shop and field applications. Built from M42 cobalt tool steel with a coated finish, this bit handles alloy steels, aluminum, and other tough workpiece materials where standard high-speed steel bits wear prematurely. The 135-degree split point reduces walking at contact and lowers the thrust force needed to start a hole. The overall length is 2-3/16 inches with a straight cylindrical shank diameter of 0.1770 inches, making it compatible with standard drill chucks. The parabolic flute geometry promotes efficient chip evacuation during deeper passes.
This bit is sized to wire gauge 16, with a decimal equivalent of 0.1770 inches, and is classified as a heavy-duty grade screw machine length drill. Screw machine length bits are shorter than jobber-length bits, which increases rigidity and reduces deflection in drill press, turret lathe, and screw machine setups. Typical applications include production drilling in metal fabrication, machining shops, and maintenance environments where hole location accuracy and tool life matter. Right-hand cut geometry is standard for conventional rotating spindles.
Designed as a screw machine length drill bit for use in standard drill chucks and production machine spindles accepting a 0.1770-inch straight cylindrical shank. Suited for right-hand rotating spindles in drill press, CNC, turret lathe, and screw machine applications.
Install and remove drill bits only with the spindle fully stopped and power locked out per applicable shop safety procedures. Secure the straight shank firmly in the chuck and verify runout before beginning production drilling. Use appropriate cutting fluid for alloy steel and aluminum workpieces to maintain tool life and surface finish. Inspect the cutting edges and web thinning regularly; replace the bit when visible wear, chipping, or oversized hole diameter is observed.
