The CLEVELAND C14230 is a screw machine length cobalt drill bit designed for high-performance drilling in demanding industrial and trade applications. Built to ASME B94.11M standards, it features a 135-degree split point that reduces walking and penetrates material with less pressure than a standard 118-degree point. The parabolic flute geometry improves chip evacuation, which is critical when drilling deep holes in tough materials. At 3.875 inches overall length, the stub-length body provides added rigidity over jobber-length bits, reducing deflection in production drilling setups. This bit is a right-hand cut tool suited for use in drill presses, CNC machining centers, and hand-held power drills where a short, stiff bit is required.
The C14230 is sized at 17/32 inches (0.5313 inches) diameter and is rated for heavy-duty use. Primary workpiece materials include alloy steels and aluminum. The cobalt construction — M42 grade — gives the bit improved red hardness, making it well suited for stainless steel, hardened alloys, and other abrasion-resistant materials where standard high-speed steel bits lose their edge quickly. The straight-cylindrical shank accommodates standard drill chucks without requiring a special holder, making this bit easy to deploy across a wide range of equipment found in machine shops, fabrication facilities, and field service environments.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement or direct-use screw machine drill bit for production and maintenance drilling operations requiring a 17/32-inch diameter cobalt stub-length bit with a straight-cylindrical shank.
Install in a properly rated drill chuck that matches the 0.5313-inch shank diameter and verify the chuck is fully tightened before operation. Power down and lock out the machine before bit changes in accordance with applicable OSHA lockout/tagout procedures. Use appropriate cutting fluid for the workpiece material, particularly when drilling stainless steel or hardened alloys, to extend bit life and improve hole finish. Inspect the cutting edges and split point before each use — cobalt bits can chip under impact if subjected to interrupted cuts without adequate feed rate control.
