The CLEVELAND C12249 is a taper shank drill bit engineered for heavy-duty drilling applications in metal fabrication, machining, and industrial maintenance environments. Built from high-speed steel with an oxide finish, this bit measures 63/64 inches (0.9844 inches) in diameter and mounts via a No. 3 Morse taper shank, allowing direct installation into taper-socket spindles on drill presses, lathes, and milling machines. The 118-degree standard point angle and web-thinned tip reduce entry force and improve chip evacuation. A spiral flute design with 6.375 inches of flute length and an 11-inch overall length suits through-hole and deep-hole work in ferrous and non-ferrous stock.
This bit is intended for general-purpose drilling in production shops, tool rooms, and maintenance facilities. The 3MT taper shank seats directly in any machine spindle or sleeve bored to No. 3 Morse taper, eliminating the need for a separate chuck. Right-hand cutting direction is standard for conventional spindle rotation. The bit conforms to ASME B94.11M dimensional standards, making it a direct fit for applications that specify compliance with that specification. Typical users include machinists, millwrights, and tool-and-die technicians working on structural components, fixtures, and fabricated assemblies.
Designed for use in any drill press, lathe, or machine tool spindle bored to No. 3 Morse taper, including machines that accept direct taper shank tooling per standard Morse taper specifications.
Installation requires seating the Morse taper shank firmly into a clean, dry No. 3 Morse taper socket using a drift and mallet to ensure full engagement. Power down and lock out the machine before inserting or removing the bit. Inspect the taper socket and shank for burrs or debris before seating, as contamination will prevent proper contact and can cause the bit to spin or eject under load. Removal is accomplished with a taper drift inserted through the spindle drift slot.
