The CLEVELAND C12247 is a taper shank drill bit designed for heavy-duty drilling applications in metal fabrication, machining, and industrial maintenance. Built from high-speed steel with an oxide finish, it measures 31/32 inches (0.9688 inches) in diameter and carries a 3MT Morse taper shank for secure seating in compatible drill presses, lathes, and milling machines. The 118-degree standard point with web thinning reduces thrust and improves chip ejection at start-up. Overall length is 11 inches with a 6.375-inch spiral flute that promotes consistent chip clearance during through-hole and blind-hole operations. This bit is manufactured to ASME B94.11M standards and suited for right-hand cutting in general-purpose applications.
This drill bit is intended for use in stationary machine tool setups where a Morse taper socket or sleeve is available. Typical applications include production drilling in steel, cast iron, aluminum, and similar machinable materials. The 3MT taper shank is commonly found on mid-size drill presses and lathes in job shop, manufacturing, and maintenance environments. It is not designed for handheld portable drill use. Machinists and tool-room professionals will find it appropriate for standard hole-making operations where a straight-shank bit lacks the rigidity or holding force needed.
Designed for use in machine spindles, drill presses, lathes, and milling machine quills fitted with a No. 3 Morse taper socket. A 3MT-to-2MT or 3MT-to-4MT reducing or extension sleeve may be used where the spindle taper differs.
Installation requires powering down and locking out the machine before inserting or removing the taper shank. Clean both the shank and the spindle socket with a clean cloth to remove chips, oil, and debris before seating — contamination prevents full taper engagement and can cause runout or ejection during operation. Drive the shank firmly into the socket with a soft mallet or use the machine drawbar if equipped; never use excessive lateral force. A drift and drift slot should be used to eject the bit safely when removal is needed.
