The CLEVELAND C12183 is a taper shank drill bit designed for drilling precise holes in metal, steel, and other ferrous and non-ferrous materials in machine shop and industrial applications. Built from high-speed steel with an oxide finish, this bit features a 1/2 inch diameter, a 118-degree standard point angle, and a web-thinned tip that reduces thrust and improves chip clearing at entry. The No. 2 Morse taper shank seats securely in compatible drill press spindles, lathes, and milling machine quills, providing rigid tool holding without a separate chuck. Machinists and tool-room technicians specify this bit for general-purpose drilling in production and maintenance environments.
This bit is suited for use in radial arm drills, drill presses, lathes, and milling machines equipped with a No. 2 Morse taper spindle. The spiral flute geometry and right-hand cutting direction make it appropriate for through-hole and blind-hole work in mild steel, cast iron, aluminum, and similar materials. It is a general-purpose bit intended for standard-duty production drilling where a straight-shank bit and chuck would introduce runout or rigidity concerns.
Designed for use in machine tool spindles, drill presses, lathes, and milling machines with a No. 2 Morse taper socket. Part of the CLEVELAND Series 2410 line of taper shank drill bits.
Installation and removal should be performed by a machinist or qualified tool-room technician. Before mounting, ensure the machine spindle is fully powered down and the taper socket is clean and free of chips or burrs that could affect seating. Drive the taper shank fully into the spindle socket using a drift and mallet only when necessary, and always use a proper drift key in the spindle slot for safe removal. Never force a mismatched taper into a spindle socket, as improper seating can cause tool ejection during operation.
