The CLEVELAND C12117 is a taper shank twist drill bit designed for general-purpose drilling in metal, wood, and plastic. It carries a No. 1 Morse taper (1MT) shank for secure seating in compatible drill presses, lathes, and taper-socket holders. The bit is ground from high-speed steel with an oxide finish for baseline corrosion resistance. A 118-degree standard point and right-hand spiral flute make this a conventional, versatile choice for production and maintenance drilling. Web thinning reduces entry force and improves chip evacuation at the cutting tip. Overall length is 6.375 inches with a flute length of 3.125 inches, giving adequate reach for most standard drilling operations.
This bit is suited for machine shop, maintenance, and light manufacturing environments where a 1MT taper-socket spindle is available. Typical applications include through-hole and blind-hole drilling in mild steel, aluminum, brass, and thermoplastics. The 19/64-inch diameter (0.2969 inches decimal) fills a common fractional size used in bolt clearance, tapping prep, and fixture work. It conforms to ASME B94.11M, the standard governing straight and taper shank twist drills. Machinists, maintenance technicians, and toolroom operators are the primary users of this style and size.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement or direct tooling selection for any machine spindle or tool holder accepting a No. 1 Morse taper shank drill bit.
Installation requires a 1MT taper socket in the machine spindle or a dedicated Morse taper sleeve adapter. Power down and lock out the machine before seating or removing the bit. Drive the taper firmly into the socket with a soft mallet to ensure full engagement, and use a drift key through the spindle slot to release it cleanly without damage to the shank. Confirm spindle speed is appropriate for the workpiece material and bit diameter before starting the cut.
