The CLEVELAND C04654 is a screw machine length (stub length) drill bit designed for general-purpose drilling in metal fabrication, machining, and production environments. Built from high-speed steel (HSS) with a bright/uncoated finish, this bit features a 7/8 inch (0.8750 inch) diameter, a 118-degree standard point angle, and a web-thinned tip that reduces thrust and improves starting accuracy. The shortened overall length of 5.5 inches provides added rigidity over jobber-length bits, making it well suited for drill press and CNC turret work where chatter control matters. It is installed and used by machinists, tool-and-die technicians, and HVAC or mechanical contractors performing structural or sheet metal drilling.
The C04654 is intended for drilling alloy steel, aluminum, and similar workpiece materials in light to medium production settings. Its right-hand cut, two-flute spiral configuration clears chips effectively in through-hole and blind-hole applications. The straight cylindrical shank at 0.8750 inch diameter seats directly in standard drill chucks and quick-change holders without adapters. The short flute length of 3.5 inches and reduced overall length make this bit especially effective in tight-clearance setups or when using a drill press with limited quill travel.
Designed as an OEM-style screw machine length drill bit suitable for use with standard drill chucks and turret-style drill presses accepting a 0.8750 inch straight cylindrical shank. Primary workpiece materials include alloy steel and aluminum.
Secure the shank fully in the chuck and verify runout before drilling. Use appropriate cutting fluid or coolant when drilling alloy steel to extend tool life and maintain dimensional accuracy. Ensure the workpiece is clamped securely before operation. Inspect the cutting edges for wear regularly and replace when the point shows rounding or chipping that affects hole quality.
