The CHICAGO-LATROBE 70317 is a jobber-length drill bit sized to Letter Q (0.3320 inches) and designed for general-purpose metal drilling in production and maintenance environments. Built from high speed steel (HSS) with a titanium nitride (TiN) coating, the bit delivers improved surface hardness and extended tool life compared to uncoated HSS. The 118-degree standard point angle suits a wide range of ferrous materials, and the web-thinned, tapered web design reduces thrust requirements at the point. Overall length is 4.75 inches with a flute length of 3.4375 inches. Machinists, tool-and-die technicians, and maintenance mechanics are the primary installers of this bit.
The 70317 is intended for drilling cast iron and steel in both shop and field settings. Its straight-cylindrical shank (0.3320 inches in diameter) seats directly in standard Jacobs-style keyless or keyed chucks on drill presses, CNC machining centers, and hand-held power drills. The regular spiral, 2-flute configuration clears chips efficiently at moderate feed rates. The bit conforms to DIN 338 dimensional standards, making it a direct fit where DIN 338 jobber-length tooling is specified.
Designed as a general-purpose DIN 338 jobber-length drill bit for use in cast iron and steel workpieces. Compatible with any standard chuck accepting a 0.3320-inch straight-cylindrical shank. No coolant-through capability; suited for conventional external coolant or dry cutting at appropriate speeds and feeds.
A licensed machinist or qualified maintenance technician should verify spindle speed and feed rate are appropriate for the workpiece material and bit diameter before use. Secure the straight-cylindrical shank fully into the chuck and confirm runout before engaging the cut. The bit does not support coolant-through delivery — apply external cutting fluid as required for the workpiece material. Inspect the cutting edges and TiN coating for wear or chipping before each use and replace the bit if edge integrity is compromised.
