The CHICAGO-LATROBE 70228 is a jobber-length twist drill bit designed for general-purpose drilling in metal fabrication, maintenance, and trade service work. Built from high speed steel with a titanium nitride (TiN) coating, it delivers improved surface hardness and extended cutting life compared to uncoated HSS bits. The bit measures 7/16 inch in diameter with a 118-degree standard point angle and a 5-1/2 inch overall length. The spiral flute geometry and web-thinned, tapered web configuration promote efficient chip evacuation and reduce the thrust force needed to start and maintain a cut. Licensed tradespeople and industrial users who drill cast iron and steel regularly will find this a dependable daily-use bit.
The 70228 is suited for right-hand drilling operations in cast iron and steel workpieces across residential, commercial, and light industrial settings. The straight-cylindrical shank at 7/16 inch diameter seats securely in standard three-jaw chucks and drill presses without slippage. At 5-1/2 inch overall length with a 4-1/16 inch flute length, it handles typical through-hole and blind-hole depths found in structural, mechanical, and HVAC-related metalwork. This bit is sold individually and is appropriate for shop use, field service kits, and tool crib inventory.
Designed for general-purpose drilling in cast iron and steel. Fits any standard three-jaw chuck or drill press capable of accepting a 7/16 inch straight-cylindrical shank. Part of the CHICAGO-LATROBE Series 150T jobber-length drill bit line.
Secure the shank fully in the chuck before operation and verify the chuck key is removed prior to powering the drill. Use appropriate cutting fluid or coolant when drilling steel to extend bit life, even though this bit does not feature through-coolant capability. Wear ANSI-rated eye protection and secure the workpiece with clamps or a vise — never hold by hand. Inspect the cutting edges for wear before each use; a dull bit increases heat and can cause workpiece damage or bit breakage.
